However, census officials are using the controversial technique anyway, to get a population count they consider more accurate.The US Supreme Court has ruled that census sampling violates the Constitution. The surveys currently being conducted are not part of the official census, a bureau official said, but rather for states and agencies seeking "more accurate, adjusted" figures."

A spokesman for the Cato Institute in Washington called the government's decision "mighty suspicious", but a senior defense analyst said he sees no connection between the two incidents.

Others refer to Gore's alleged flip-flops on tobacco and abortion, according to RNC Deputy Press Secretary Mark Pfeifle.
