Biden's Promise To Make Solar 'As Cheap As Coal' Threatens Skyrocketing Coal Prices

Vice President Joe Biden told a group of college-age Americans at the White House on Thursday that their generation that will see solar energy “as cheap as gas, uh, coal.” If the administration’s energy policies are any indication, he’s probably not talking about equaling the cost by making solar LESS expensive.

“Your generation is going to live through us being able to make solar energy as cheap as gas uh, coal, excuse me, as coal,” Biden declared.

Notice that he says one will be “as cheap as” the other. Unfortunately, the administration’s plan seems to be to make non-solar energy more expensive – not to make solar energy less costly.

As a senator on the campaign trail, Obama promised to “bankrupt” the coal industry by making it too expensive to do business. Now, it appears Obama’s making good on that threat.

As the president of the American Coalition for Clean Coal Energy warned at the end of March of this year:

“This latest (EPA) rule will make it impossible to build any new coal-fueled power plants, and could cause the premature closure of many more coal-fueled power plants operating today.

“So far, other EPA regulations are responsible for the announced closure of more than 140 electricity generating units in 19 states.”

Currently, the cost to generate electricity from solar sources is more than three times that of using coal. But, if the administration drives the cost of coal high enough, solar will eventually be “as cheap.”

And, this isn’t the only instance where the Obama administration has taken to raising the price of an energy source that’s not “green” enough for its liking.

Remember when Pres. Obama said he would like to see gas prices rise, or when the man he appointed as his energy secretary said he wanted “to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe?”

Well, guess what: the cost of a gallon of gas has nearly doubled under Obama.
