Appearing on NBC's "Meet The Press" today, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said that the type of mass shooting that occurred at the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy "only happens in America."
Host David Gregory asked the mayor for his reaction to the recent shooting in Newtown, Connecticut that left 28 people dead, including 20 children.
"It's so unbelievable and it only happens in America. And it happens again and again...we kill people in schools, we kill them in hospitals, we kill them in religious organizations. We kill them when they're young, we kill them when they're old, and we just got to stop this."
Bloomberg called on President Barack Obama to increase gun regulations through the use of executive action:
"It's time for the president, I think, to stand up and lead and tell this country what we should do - not go to Congress and say, 'What do you guys want to do?' This should be his number one agenda. He's president of the United States."
"What the president can do is number one, through executive action, he can order his agencies to enforce the laws more aggressively," Bloomberg said.
Only in America?
I'm not sure what Mayor Michael Bloomberg was doing on July 22, 2011, or what type of memory he has, but I certainly remember a man named Anders Behring Breivik taking the lives of 77 individuals at a summer camp in Norway.
And, the last time I checked, Norway wasn't part of the United States.
