Everest. Surviving members of the first American expedition team to reach the top of Mt. Everest are celebrating the 50th anniversary of their mountaineering milestones. Jim Whittaker rweached the top of the world on May 1, 1963, a decade after Britain's Edmund Hillary. Three weeks later, two other Americans, Tom Hornbein and Willi Unsoeld, became the first men ever to scale Everest via more dangerous route on the mountain's west side. (AP Photo/Henry S.
