Considered critical to peace in Afghanistan, Pakistan late last year accepted a request from Afghanistan's High Peace Council to free several Afghan Taliban prisoners. So far, 24 Taliban have been released. The release was meant to be a good will gesture to coax a reluctant Taliban leadership to negotiate directly with Afghan President Hamid Karzai's Afghan High Peace Council.
