2 NY teens die after cesspool accident
FARMINGVILLE, N.Y. (AP) — Police in New York say two teenagers injured in a cesspool accident have died.
Sixteen-year-old Eduardo Vanegas-Fuentes, of Holtsville, died Thursday morning at Stony Brook University Medical Center on Long Island. His friend, 19-year-old Edgar Calderon-Castro, of Farmingville, was declared dead at the same hospital later the same day.
Police say Vanegas-Fuentes fell into the cesspool at a Farmingville home at about 8 p.m. Wednesday. Calderon-Castro then jumped in and tried to rescue him. Another friend who lived in the house ran to get his father, who called 911.
Police say the teens were not aware that a concrete slab they were trying to open was covering a cesspool.
An autopsy will determine the cause of their deaths. Authorities suspect they were overcome by toxic fumes.
