Serena Williams says she will play for the U.S Fed Cup team twice next year. The 13-time Grand Slam champion hasn't competed in the Fed Cup since 2007.
The U.S. Tennis Association says that if Williams participates in both Fed Cup ties, it will consider her eligible for the 2012 Olympic team — although the International Tennis Federation "will make the final decision." ITF Olympic rules require women to have made themselves available for Fed Cup in two years from 2009-12.
In a statement released to The Associated Press by the USTA on Wednesday, Williams says she is "committing" to be on the team. The U.S. hosts Belarus in a second-tier group match Feb. 4-5 and will play again in April.
