Ariz. gov keeps presidential primary on Feb. 28
PHOENIX (AP) — Gov. Jan Brewer has issued a proclamation saying she's not moving the state's Feb. 28 primary to an earlier date.
Brewer received national attention earlier this year when she raised the possibility of moving up Arizona's primary to Jan. 31 to give Arizona the nation's first White House nominating contest for 2012. She then backed down but left open the option of moving it up to a different time.
Now, she says the date isn't changing at all.
Brewer spokesman Matthew Benson says issuing the proclamation "ensures there's no confusion" about when Arizona will hold its primary.
Brewer said she's confident Arizona will have a voice in the nominating process through both its Feb. 28 primary and the Republican National Committee's tentative decision to hold a Republican candidates debate in the state.
