EDINBURG, Texas (AP) — Authorities have arrested a suspect in connection with the shooting of two boys outside a South Texas school as they tried out for the basketball team.
The Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office says in a statement the suspect will be arraigned Friday morning. The statement did not name the suspect, and Hidalgo County prosecutors did not immediately return a phone message.
The children were struck last month in a parking lot, converted into a basketball court, behind Harwell Middle School near Edinburg. Rifles were seized from three men on adjacent ranchland.
Authorities said the suspect is believed to be responsible for shooting at least one of the boys.
Doctors say 14-year-old Edson Amaro sustained massive injuries when he and 13-year-old Nicholas Tijerina were shot. Both are expected to recover.
