Authorities: 3 children killed in Ga. house fire
October 1, 2011
VALDOSTA, Ga. (AP) — Authorities in Georgia say three children are dead after a house fire in the southern part of the state.
Valdosta Fire Chief J.D. Rice says firefighters were called to the family's home about 4 a.m. Saturday. Fire department spokeswoman Sementha Matthews says a fourth child was in the home but escaped.
She was unsure how many adults were in the home at the time of the fire. Authorities believe the blaze was caused by unattended cooking in the kitchen.
Authorities did not release the names or ages of the three children who died. Rice said the home did not have a smoke detector.
The blaze is under investigation.
