(CNSNews.com) - Speaking at Lackawanna College in Scranton, Pa., on Friday, Vice President Joe Biden said there are "only three women that I know who are close to perfect"—his mother, Sen. Bob Casey’s (D.-Pa.) mother and God’s Mother (the Blessed Mother)—before he caught himself and said the Blessed Mother was, in fact, perfect.

Biden made the remarks while introducing President Barack Obama.

“You know, Mr. President, some might think this is a bit of nostalgia on my part, talking about Bobby, talking about my native town like I am,” said Biden. “And by the way, there’s only three women that I know who are close to perfect. One was perfect--the Blessed Mother. The other was my mother, and the other is Bobby’s mom, Ellen Casey, right there.”

Biden is a Catholic, and the Catholic Church professes that Mary, the mother of Jesus, was conceived without the stain of original sin, was redeemed from the moment of her conception, and is truly the Mother of God.

“To become the mother of the Savior, Mary ‘was enriched by God with gifts appropriate to such a role,’” says the Catholic Catechism. “The angel Gabriel at the moment of the annunciation salutes her as ‘full of grace.’ In fact, in order for Mary to be able to give the free assent of her faith to the announcement of her vocation, it was necessary that she be wholly borne by God's grace.

“Through the centuries the Church has become ever more aware that Mary, ‘full of grace’ through God, was redeemed from the moment of her conception,” says the Catechism. “That is what the dogma of the Immaculate Conception confesses, as Pope Pius IX proclaimed in 1854: 'The most Blessed Virgin Mary was, from the first moment of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege of almighty God and by virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ, Savior of the human race, preserved immune from all stain of original sin.’”

“The Fathers of the Eastern tradition call the Mother of God ‘the All-Holy’ (Panagia), and celebrate her as ‘free from any stain of sin, as though fashioned by the Holy Spirit and formed as a new creature,’” says the Catechism. “By the grace of God Mary remained free of every personal sin her whole life long.”

Ellen Casey, mother of Sen. Bob Casey Jr. (D.-Pa.), was the wife of the late Gov. Bob Casey of Pennsylvania. Gov. Casey was refused a speaking slot at the 1992 Democratic National Convention because he wanted to speak in favor of the pro-life cause.

Vice President Joe Biden, like President Barack Obama, argues that women have a right to abort a child—from the moment of conception.
