DENTON, Texas (AP) — A pilot from China has been killed and another Chinese pilot and their U.S. instructor are injured after their small aircraft crashed in North Texas.

Police officer Ryan Grelle says the three were on a training flight to San Antonio early Tuesday when they crashed near Denton Municipal Airport, 35 miles northwest of Dallas.

US Aviation Academy president Michael Parafinik says Xie Chengjie was found dead at the scene. The flight instructor, Michael Lin, was rescued from the wreckage and taken to a hospital with serious injuries. Zhao Shuran was released from the hospital after being treated for minor injuries.

Authorities are unsure who was flying the Cessna 172.

Parafinik says pilots came to the U.S. for a yearlong program to get their instrument rating.
