Family members of the 17 sailors killed in the attack on the USS Cole have filed a new lawsuit against Sudan in federal court in Virginia.
Norfolk, Va. (AP) - Family members of the 17 sailors killed in the attack on the USS Cole have filed a new lawsuit against Sudan in federal court in Virginia.

Sixty-one plaintiffs are seeking $282.5 million in damages for pain and suffering. The lawsuit was filed late last week in Norfolk.

Three years ago, 33 family members received about $13 million in compensatory damages and interest after U.S. District Judge Robert Doumar found Sudan liable for assisting the terrorists who attacked the destroyer at a Yemeni port in 2000. However, Doumar said federal law barred him from awarding punitive damages.

Congress has since passed legislation that allows families of terrorism victims to seek pain and suffering damages.
