Finally here, Ames straw poll first test of 2012

August 13, 2011

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Nine Republicans hoping to challenge President Barack Obama's re-election in 2012 are hoping an early test vote gives their White House bids a boost.

Saturday's Iowa Straw Poll marks the first time Republicans weigh in on the GOP presidential field with ballots and could prove a boon for candidates who have spent months laying the groundwork despite poor polling. The event comes with Texas Gov. Rick Perry poised to enter the campaign while visiting another early nominating state, South Carolina.

The nonbinding results in Iowa were likely to foreshadow the coming months in the leadoff nominating state and perhaps force some candidates from the race.
