Finally, World Trade Center rises from ground zero
NEW YORK (AP) — Ten years after the 9/11 attacks destroyed the World Trade Center, the site once known as a "hole in the ground" is transforming with skyscrapers and a finished 9/11 memorial.
The 9/11 memorial, featuring man-made waterfalls in the twin towers' footprints, will open on Sept. 11. 1 World Trade Center — formerly called the Freedom Tower — is growing by a story a week and now pokes above the skyline as the tallest building in lower Manhattan. A transit station and a second office tower also are taking shape.
The redevelopment of the trade center was once mired for years in disputes between government agencies, insurers and a developer who leased the towers before they collapsed.
Trade center master planner Daniel Libeskind says that now, "the tensions are gone."
