Haitians in Florida mark earthquake anniversary

MIAMI (AP) — Haitians in South Florida are preparing to mark the second anniversary of the catastrophic earthquake that crippled their Caribbean homeland.

The Jan. 12, 2010, earthquake killed a government-estimated 316,000 people. Thousands of survivors were evacuated to the U.S. for medical care.

In Miami, a partnership of 11 Haitian-American professional, community development and arts organizations will release Thursday a draft plan addressing the ongoing needs of earthquake survivors still living there.

The aid group International Rescue Committee will discuss current conditions in Haiti at a panel discussion at Florida International University.

A prayer vigil also is planned at a statue of Haitian patriot Toussaint Louverture in the Little Haiti neighborhood.
