Irene centered 50 miles south of Cape Lookout, NC
MIAMI (AP) — Forecasters say Hurricane Irene, which weakened to a Category 2 storm as it approached the U.S. coast, was about 50 miles south of Cape Lookout, N.C.
The National Hurricane Center said at 4 a.m. EDT Saturday that the enormous storm was moving north-northeastward at 14 mph (22 kph).
Forecasters say the storm has maximum sustained winds of 90 mph (150 kph) and was a still-dangerous Category 2 storm.
The Miami-based center says the location of Irene's center was estimated by experts aboard an Air Force Reserve hurricane hunter aircraft.
