New York (AP) - Fox News Channel chief White House correspondent Major Garrett says he's leaving the network after eight years to return to print journalism.

The National Journal said Wednesday it had hired Garrett as its congressional correspondent. Garrett says it took "something near perfection" to lure him from the best job he's ever had.

Garrett worked at the Washington Times and CNN before joining Fox in 2002. No replacement was named, but Fox says current White House correspondents Wendell Goler and Mike Emanuel will take the beat.

He will leave only a month after getting new real estate. Fox was granted a coveted front-row seat in the White House briefing room after the resignation of Helen Thomas from Hearst News Service.
