Miami Beach police department comes under scrutiny
MIAMI (AP) — Prosecutors say a former Miami Beach police officer is being charged with four felonies after he was driving drunk on an all-terrain vehicle and injured two people on South Beach.
It's one of several incidents within the last couple of years to raise questions about the tourist destination's police force. Other incidents include two officers accused of taunting and falsely arresting a gay man in 2009. And earlier this year, the city's police department was harshly criticized for a police-involved shooting in which some 100 shots were fired in a fatal confrontation.
In the ATV crash, Derick Kuilan and another officer were fired earlier this month for allegedly drinking on duty before the July 3 crash. It's not clear whether Kuilan has an attorney.
