Liberty Law School Dean: Gay Marriage 'Beginning of End of Western Civilization’
(CNSNews.com) – Mathew D. Staver, dean of the Liberty University School of Law, said that efforts to change the definition of marriage to include same-sex “marriage” would be like trying to re-define the law of gravity, adding that, if it were tried, it would mark “the beginning of the end of Western civilization.”
“We’ve never been in this situation before,” Staver said in a speech at the American Decency Association 2014 Summer Conference in Grand Rapids, Mich. “We will not be able to escape the coercive nature of this issue. It is cataclysmic in its change-effect. It is, I believe, ultimately the beginning of the end of Western civilization, if we adopt this as a country.”
Staver, who is also the founder and chairman of the international litigation group Liberty Counsel, made his remarks during a speech entitled “Living in the Shade of Vesuvius.”
“Now, we can have judges, I don’t care how many, or legislators, I don’t care how numerous, who want to pass a law or write an opinion that says marriage was good for the people back then but it’s now two people of the same sex and you can’t affirm God’s natural created order as marriage,” said Staver.
“But that would be as silly and ridiculous as a judge or legislative body, or even the people by popular vote, saying, you know, the idea of gravity was good for the Founders and they worked with that okay, but we really like the idea of being able to fly,” he explained. “We don’t want to get into airplanes. We’d like to jump and fly and have freedom.”
Staver continued, “It doesn’t matter how many opinions or how many votes you have for that, you can’t change God’s natural created order. Marriage, the abolition of marriage is what we’re facing right now, is literally an abolishing of gender. We’ve never been in this situation before. We will not be able to escape the coercive nature of this issue. It is cataclysmic in its change-effect.”
“It is, I believe, ultimately the beginning of the end of Western civilization, if we adopt this as a country,” said Staver.
The American Decency Association 2014 Summer Conference was held on July 18, 2014 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Mount Vesuvius is an active volcano near Naples, Italy that erupted in AD 79 and destroyed the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, killing an estimated 16,000 people.
