Louisville, Ky. (AP) - Kentucky Republican Senate candidate Rand Paul says questions about whether he is a board-certified eye doctor are an attack on his ability to make a living.

The libertarian-leaning Paul said Monday that he challenged one of his profession's most powerful groups a decade ago over its certification policy. Paul told The Associated Press he was riled by a "hypocritical power play" by the American Board of Ophthalmology that he thought favored older doctors over younger ones.

Paul helped create a rival group that has recertified several hundred ophthalmologists. His organization is not recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties, which governs two dozen medical specialty boards.

The campaign for his Democratic rival says the episode raises questions about Paul's character.
