( - A leading pro-abortion group has labeled Republican legislation designed to offer alternatives for pregnant women as "cynical and misguided."

Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA) has introduced the Women and Children's Resources Act (WCRA) , that's designed to help women cope with unplanned pregnancy. It establish an 85 million dollar formula grant program from such entities as adoption services, maternity homes and crisis pregnancy centers. Taking up the bill's cause in the House are Rep. Mary Bono (R-CA) and Rep. Joseph Pitts (R-PA).

Santorum said the legislation offers compassionate, life affirming chocies and links women to a network of supportive organizations. He also believes the legislation would especially help low income women in dealing with unwanted pregnancies.

Not everybody agrees. Planned Parenthood President Gloria Feldt, in a statement, said, "the so-called 'True Choice' bill is cynical and misguided. For the first time, the federal government will be subsidizing biased counseling, denying women a full range of reproductive choices. The bill denies vulnerable women counseling on contraceptive services."

Feldt also contends, "family planning organizations offer many of the same services this bill claims it will offer. This bill is pointless. The only reason to introduce this bill now is to create a political firestorm where none exists."

The bill would provide testing for pregnancy, including follow up services and adoption information. Prenatal and postpartum health care and referrals for other services, items and assistance regarding health, mental health, food, clothing, housing, education and vocational training.
