MARTINSVILLE, Ind. (AP) — Talks have failed to produce a plea agreement for the central Indiana 16-year-old accused of shooting a former classmate at a school.

WISH-TV and The Indianapolis Star quote defense attorney Steven Litz as saying he proposed a plea deal for 16-year-old Michael Phelps of Martinsville, but prosecutors rejected it. Litz didn't disclose the proposed terms.

Phelps is charged as an adult with attempted murder, aggravated battery and other felonies in connection with the March 25 shooting of 15-year-old Chance Jackson at Martinsville West Middle School. Jackson is recovering from two shots to his abdomen.

Jurors will be brought in from another county for the trial, which is set to begin July 11 in Morgan Superior Court in Martinsville.
