(CNSNews.com) - Conservative activist Ralph Reed said that unborn children should be protected under the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and that late-term abortionist Kermit Gosnell’s alleged murder of four newborns violates their God-given and constitutional rights.

Speaking on the live debate show “Intelligence Squared,” Reed was debating other conservatives on the Republican Party, and abortion was one of the issues discussed.

Reed, who headed the Christian Coalition in the 1990s, is founder and president of the Faith and Freedom Coalition.

“By the way, it fits in the same place that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 fits in, okay?” Reed said. “I'm not allowed to deny you the right to sit at a lunch counter simply because of the color of your skin.

“And we believe that if you take, for example, the issue of abortion, that an unborn child is a person for purposes of the 14th amendment of the Constitution; therefore, to take their life without due process, as we're seeing unfold in this gruesome trial in Pennsylvania, with this doctor who systemically executed children who could perform outside the womb, violated their God-given right, and by the way, their constitutional right to life and liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” Reed said.

The jury (in the case before the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas) is hearing closing arguments in the trial of Gosnell, accused of first-degree murder in the deaths of four “viable fetuses” and third-degree murder in the death of a woman who died from an overdose of drugs being administered prior to an abortion.
