Red Sox' Matsuzaka says elbow surgery only option

BOSTON (AP) — Red Sox pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka is preparing for surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right elbow.
Matsuzaka spoke Sunday for the first time since the Red Sox placed him on the 60-day disabled list so he can have Tommy John surgery.
He says doctors told him surgery was the only way to repair the torn ligament. The recovery could take over a year.
Matsuzaka is in the fifth year of a six-year deal he signed when Boston brought him over from Japan. He says he hopes to pitch again for the Red Sox, although that will depend on how quickly he recovers.
