Republican Leads in Race to Replace Anthony Weiner
September 9, 2011
NEW YORK (AP) — The race to succeed former New York Rep. Anthony Weiner has grown shockingly close before next week's special election.
A Siena Poll released Friday shows Republican Bob Turner leading Democrat David Weprin by a 50-44 percent margin.
The Brooklyn and Queens-area district is heavily Democratic. But the weak economy and President Barack Obama's economic policies have angered many voters there.
National Democrats have launched television ads and the state's popular Democratic governor, Queens native Andrew Cuomo, has said he will help Weprin's campaign.
The special election is next Tuesday, Sept. 13.
