WASHINGTON (AP) — Rivals Rick Perry and Mitt Romney are furiously scurrying to recruit heartbroken holdouts who had hoped Chris Christie or Sarah Palin would join the Republican presidential contest. A slew of donors and activists are now up for grabs just three months before primary voting begins.
Both camps are redoubling their outreach to the high-dollar and high-power players, trying to bring aboard the political heavyweights in what has become a contest between the two.
Romney is a five-year veteran of the White House race and is still courting the same activists and donors. He's hoping they'll finally line up behind his effort to capture the GOP nomination and perhaps the presidency.
Perry is working to make up lost ground quickly. He hopes to recapture the initial energy of his late-to-the-game campaign.
