Rubio: Obama Administration ‘Insensitive’ to Free Exercise of Religion
(CNSNews.com) – Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) believes the Obama administration is infringing Americans’ First Amendment right to the free exercise of religion by requiring all health insurance plans--except those for actual churches--to cover sterilization and contraception.

“I think at a minimum they (the Obama administration) are insensitive,” Rubio told CNSNews.com. “I think that they believe the rights of the state and the needs of the state trump even the expression of religious beliefs. I think that’s unfortunate. I hope we can change that in November.”
Under Obamacare, the Department of Health and Human Services is requiring health insurance plans to cover sterilizations and all FDA-approved contraceptives, including those that induce abortion. The Catholic Church has ojbected to the regulation as "an unprecedented attack on religious liberty" because it will force Catholics to pay for things that violate the moral teachings of their church.
“I think it’s a violation of religious expression rights under our Constitution,” Rubio told CNSNews.com. “I don’t think the government ought to be requiring people that have a strong religious belief about something to do something that violates their religion. It’s unfortunate. But it’s par for the course for this administration.”
CNSNews.com followed, “Do you think there could be legislation to overturn that rule?”
“We’ll see,” Rubio responded.” I haven’t heard discussion about it. I hope there can be.”
Last week, Cardinal-designate Timothy M. Dolan, the president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, recorded a video statement saying that the administration is violating the First Amendment by forcing Catholics to purchase health insurance plans that cover sterilization and artificial contraceptives, including abortifacients.
HHS said the mandate will take effect Aug. 1. HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius says religiously based organizations have until Aug. 1, 2013 to act against their faith and follow the administration’s order.
