Some military college alumni upset by pride events
NORTHFIELD, Vt. (AP) — The president of a Vermont military college says some alumni are upset that the school held a gay pride week that featured events such as a "condom Olympics" and a "queer prom."
Norwich University President Richard Schneider says the mission of the school's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning and Allies club is going to be refocused on education to ensure that everyone on the Northfield campus feels safe.
He isn't backing away from Norwich's commitment to ensure that gay and lesbian students are fully and openly integrated into school life and eventually the U.S. military. But he says focusing on "condom Olympics" isn't preparing them for adulthood.
Club President Joshua Fontanez says he knew the pride week would upset some, but he called the week a success.
