Souris levels off at Minot 2 feet below projection
MINOT, N.D. (AP) — The Souris River has leveled off at Minot, N.D., nearly 2 feet below the projected crest.
River gauges showed the Souris rising slowly Saturday morning and then holding in successive readings at 1 and 2 p.m. at 6.59 feet above major flood stage.
The National Weather Service had projected a crest as much as 8½ feet above major flood stage. The weather service was updating its forecast Saturday afternoon but wasn't ready to declare the river had crested.
The Souris has already damaged more than 4,000 homes in Minot as it surged past a 130-year-old record on Friday. City officials are hoping to hold back any further damage, but the river is expected to remain high for several days.
