MIAMI (AP) — A former Cuban intelligence officer convicted of spying in the U.S. wants a federal judge to permit his return to Cuba after his release from prison next month.
Federal prosecutors say 55-year-old Rene Gonzalez should stay in the U.S. to serve three years of probation. Gonzalez is scheduled for release Oct. 7 after more than 13 years behind bars. Gonzalez has dual U.S.-Cuban citizenship.
Gonzalez attorney Phil Horowitz said Monday his client wants to return home to his family. But prosecutors say Gonzalez never showed remorse for his crimes and that there's no justification for him to go to Cuba.
The men known as the "Cuban Five" spy ring were convicted in 2001 of trying to infiltrate U.S. military bases.
