WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. Capitol Police have shut down streets around the U.S. Capitol building while they investigate a suspicious package.

Police say an officer noticed a small metal cylinder with end caps on it on Pennsylvania Avenue about 7 a.m. Thursday. Authorities say they have not been able to determine what it is.

The affected roads are First Street in northwest from Garfield Circle to Constitution Avenue, and Pennsylvania Avenue southeast from First Street to 3rd Street.
