Tropical Storm Miriam forms in eastern Pacific

MIAMI (AP) — Forecasters say Tropical Storm Miriam has formed over the eastern Pacific, but it remains well offshore and does not pose a threat to land.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Saturday that Miriam was centered about 640 miles (1030 kilometers) south-southeast of the southern tip of Baja California. It had maximum sustained winds of about 40 mph (65 kph) and was moving west-northwest at 5 mph (8 kph).
Forecasters say Miriam could become a hurricane by Monday.
