CONOVER, N.C. (AP) — Bob Tway moved a step closer to his first Champions Tour title on Saturday, firing a 5-under 67 to maintain a one-shot lead after the second round of the Greater Hickory Classic.
The overnight leader made seven birdies at Rock Barn to move to 14 under, one shot ahead of playing partner Tommy Armour III. Monday qualifier James Mason, Chip Beck, Mark Wiebe and Mark O'Meara, playing the event for the first time, were two shots back.
The 52-year-old Tway, the 1986 PGA Championship winner, doesn't have a top-10 finish on the 50-and-over circuit this year. But he's been steady amid a hot and humid weekend that has produced some low scores.
The 60-year-old Mason holed out for eagle on 14. He's trying to become the 12th qualifier to win on the circuit.
