US soldier's family to give update on his death
NEW YORK (AP) — The family of a New York City Army private who committed suicide after allegedly being mistreated by his comrades in Afghanistan will provide an update on the investigation into his death.
Daniel Chen's parents have scheduled a news conference Thursday afternoon.
The Army said its delegation briefed the family Wednesday on the findings of the South Kandahar regional command's investigation. Details were not disclosed.
Last month, the Pentagon transferred eight soldiers to another base. It's alleged that Chen was mistreated shortly before he committed suicide in an Afghanistan guardhouse.
They face charges ranging from dereliction of duty to involuntary manslaughter.
Relatives say the 19-year-old endured weeks of ethnic teasing and name calling while in training. They say he was subjected to hazing after he was deployed to Afghanistan.
