JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. (AP) — A soldier who tried to blow the whistle on a plot to murder Afghan civilians has pleaded guilty to a charge of involuntary manslaughter at his court-martial at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state.
The Tacoma News Tribune reports that Spc. Adam Winfield of Cape Coral, Fla., was sentenced late Friday to three years in prison. He will receive credit for a year already served. Winfield was also demoted to private and will receive a bad-conduct discharge.
Winfield was one of five 5th Stryker Brigade soldiers charged in a case involving three civilian deaths last year in Afghanistan. Winfield said he was pressured into taking part.
