A good lady is about to leave Washington, D.C. after decades of public service. I refer to Senator Elizabeth Hanford Dole (R-N.C.), who was defeated in her bid for re-election in the 2008 election.

When pundits are asked to name the best Presidents of the 20th Century Harry S. Truman's name always comes up. That is interesting, because when he left office 56 years ago, he had lower approval ratings than George W. Bush now has. Because he served only the unexpired term of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Truman was eligible to run for a full term. His own party told him, &quot;Don't even think of it.&quot;

As long as I can remember Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich., was one of the toughest committee chairmen in the Congress. His father preceded him in U.S. Congress during the Great Depression. I had the pleasure of visiting with him one day while Republicans controlled the Congress. He made it clear he was staying around because he again wanted to be a committee chairman.

The 111th Congress recently passed an authorization bill which provides more money for Amtrak than any bill passed in history. President George W. Bush signed the bill. For the first time Amtrak has been granted more money than required to keep the railroad operating.
