(CNS News) -- Conservatives strongly denounced presumed President-elect Joe Biden's nomination of Xavier Becerra to be secretary of the Health and Human Services Department, noting his long pro-abortion record, anti-free speech actions, and opposition to religious liberty.
Becerra, 62, currently is the attorney general of California; he replaced Kamala Harris when she won a Senate seat in 2016. Prior to that, Becerra was a member of Congress (1993-2017). During his two-plus decades in Congress, Becerra always voted in favor of abortion. Planned Parenthood and NARAL gave him 100% approval ratings.
Becerra supports sex-selective abortion and partial-birth abortion, where a baby is delivered up to its neck and then its skull is punctured with a tool and its brain removed (in pieces).
“Far from ‘uniting’ the country, Biden has proven yet again he is an extremist on abortion,” said Susan B. Anthony List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “Becerra is aggressively pro-abortion and a foe of free speech. As attorney general of California, he continued what his predecessor Kamala Harris started by persecuting citizen journalists who exposed Planned Parenthood’s role in baby parts trafficking."
"Not only that, he went all the way to the Supreme Court to try to force California’s pro-life pregnancy centers to advertise and refer for abortion – a policy the Court rejected as unconstitutional," said Dannenfelser. "In Congress, he even voted in favor of partial-birth abortion.”
“This pick underscores the importance of winning in Georgia to prevent pro-abortion forces from taking control of the U.S. Senate," she said. "Republican senators must stand firm and stop this unacceptable nomination from going forward.”
Jeanne F. Mancini, president of the March for Life, tweeted, "W/ @JoeBiden's pick of @AGBecerra for HHS Secretary, we are seeing him make good on his promise to become the most radically pro-abortion president in history."
She also tweeted, "Becerra has a long and hostile record towards pro-life Americans including the persecution of those who exposed Planned Parenthood’s trafficking in baby body parts. So much for unity."
Ashley McGuire, senior fellow with the Catholic Association, said, "President-elect Joe Biden’s choice of Xavier Becerra to run HHS is a gross insult to Catholics. Becerra spent years tormenting the Little Sisters of the Poor in court, trying to force them to pay for things like abortion pills against their consciences. He also led efforts to force pro-life pregnancy resource centers to advertise for abortion."
"Thankfully both of his efforts failed at the Supreme Court," said McGuire. "But Becerra is outright hostile to religious liberty and Biden’s choice of someone so openly anti-Catholic is an affront to the faith that he so frequently invoked as part of his campaign."

He’s been a disaster in California and he is unqualified to lead HHS.
I’ll be voting no, and Becerra should be rejected by the Senate. https://t.co/mEvpMrqPeH
"Joe Biden’s pick for head of HHS has targeted the Little Sisters of the Poor, waged war on the team who exposed Planned Parenthood’s body parts trade, and tried to strip conscience protections away from doctors and nurses," tweeted CatholicVote.org.
