UPDATE: Following an outpouring of support from fellow Americans across the nation from every walk of life, Rep. Jones announced Thursday that he has decided not to resign. Jones explained his decision and plans for the future on Twitter in both a statement and embedded video.

Vernon Jones, a Black Democrat Georgia State Representative, announced his resignation Wednesday, following a week of attacks by fellow party members for his announcement of support for President Donald Trump.

“Earlier today, I made the decision to not seek re-election to the Georgia House of Representatives,” Jones wrote on Twitter. The resignation, effective as of Wednesday, triggers a special election for his seat. However, Jones has no plans to leave the Democrat Party, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.

“I will never apologize for my convictions,” Jones said Tuesday in the first of several tweets taking issue with his party’s treatment of Black Americans:

“I’m not surprised that the Democratic Party has chosen to rent out my suite on the plantation to my opponent. I will never apologize for my convictions.”

“The modern day Democratic Party has become more about defending the interests of illegals than it has the actual American people.

“I take issue with that.”

“Black Americans are waking up. An uprising is near,” Jones declared in one post:

“I’ve seen more Democrats attack me for my decision to endorse @realDonaldTrump than ask me why. They’ve used and abused folks in my community for far too long, taking our votes for granted. Black Americans are waking up. An uprising is near.”

Candace Owens, a leader of the Blexit movement seeking to introduce conservative values to urban communities, replied to Jones’ post, praising him for his courage:

“A Democratic Georgia state house representative has worked up the courage to speak out against the plantation treatment by his own party toward black voters.

“He has awakened and is now under attack. #BLEXIT”

n previous Twitter posts, Jones took issue with the Democrat Party’s treatment of independent-minded Black Americans, as well as with the party prioritizing the interests of illegal aliens over those of Americans:

“There’s nothing the Left despises more than a free-thinking black man. Keep the hit pieces coming. The American people see through it.”

“The modern day Democratic Party has become more about defending the interests of illegals than it has the actual American people.

“I take issue with that.”

“The Left hates me because they can’t control me. They can stay mad.”

“Straight white men aren’t the black community’s enemy. Decades of failed liberal policies that have fostered dependency are,” Jones wrote Wednesday in one of a series of tweets following his resignation.

Jones says that he will now dedicate his “full energy to the re-election of @RealDonaldTrump,” promising that “We will Make America Great Again”:

“I look forward, however, to continuing to serve my community in other ways and doing all I can to re-elect @realDonaldTrump.

“We will Make America Great Again”

“I look forward to committing my full energy to the re-election of @realDonaldTrump and ensuring that the radical Democrats that have overtaken my party suffer a resounding defeat.”
