In Chicago over the weekend, 56 people were wounded and 3 others were killed by gun violence. The wounded included a 13-year-old girl, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
The weekend’s total is the lowest in over a month, since the June 13 weekend, when only 33 shot and 2 were killed, the Sun-Times reported.
Three teenagers were wounded in separate incidents on Saturday. A 13-year-old girl was struck in her leg by a bullet on the West Side and was taken to the hospital in good condition.
Two 17-year-old boys were also wounded. The first was in Morgan Park when he was grazed by a bullet. A second was simply standing on his porch when a black SUV drove by and opened fire. The boy was grazed in the head and was taken to Mount Sinai hospital in good condition, reported the Chicago Sun-Times.
Earlier in the week Chicago mourned those injured in a mass shooting at a funeral home, in which 15 were injured. Police found 60 shell casings at the scene, according to CBS News.
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, a left-wing Democrat, called it “senseless violence” and said in a press conference, “Picking up a gun, that solves nothing, but causes so much lifelong pain.”
The rest of the country was not exempt from the violence. New York City saw 7 murders within 24 hours, according to NY Daily News.
