American icon and acting legend John Wayne ended the 1970 TV special “Swing Out, Sweet Land” by calling on Americans to wake up each day with the patriotic thought, “This is my country and I’m gonna’ do good for it!”

“It just might work,” Wayne said, adding, “we’ll never know unless we give it a fair try.”  He then noted that he would say tomorrow what he says every day, “God bless America!”

He and myriad actors and entertainers then sang “God Bless America!”  Some of the well-liked and successful stars included Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Lucille Ball, Jack Benny, Glen Campbell, Johnny Cash, Roy Clark, Leslie Uggams, Phyllis Diller and Dennis Weaver.
