Rev. Franklin Graham.
Although the media and politicla pundits were in shock and could not explain the outcome of the 2016 presidential election, Reverend Franklin Graham said this was because "few of them understood the God factor," the power of prayer, and added that now Christians need to ask God to "help stop the godless, atheistic, progessive [liveral]" assault on America.
"In watching the news after the election, the media kept asking, 'How did this happen?' 'What went wrong?' 'How did we miss this?'" said Rev. Graham in a commentary for the December edition of Decision magazine.
"Some were in shock," he said. "Political pundits were stunned. Many thought the Trump-Pence ticket didn’t have a chance. Few of them understood the God factor—that hundreds of thousands of Christians from across the U.S. had been praying."
The reverend then recounted his nationwide Decision 2016 tour, which visited 50 state capitals and called on all Americans to pray to God to help the country in this election year.
"The tour was never about getting candidates elected or promoting any party’s platform," he said, "it was about getting Christians to pray, asking God to move; knowing that His will is perfect. As a result, prayer groups were started. Families prayed. Churches prayed. Then Christians went to the polls, and God showed up."
But a new president does not mean that all is well, said Rev. Graham. The country is a moral mess. "Our religious freedoms have been under severe, unrelenting attack by the courts, the current administration and a coalition of progressive activists who have worked hard to silence the Christian ethic and voice by any means possible," he said.
"Bakers and florists, photographers and innkeepers, fire chiefs and county clerks who have stood by their strongly held religious convictions have been doggedly pursued and prosecuted simply for refusing to compromise their faith," said Rev. Graham, the son of world-renowned pastor Billy Graham.
He continued, "I know God hears and answers the prayers of His people, and I believe that He has given this nation a window of opportunity to turn from our wicked ways, turn our hearts back to Him and use our freedoms for His glory. The spiritual state of our union is in tatters because we have turned our back on God, and the consequences are enormous."
"Pray that executive orders requiring public schools to allow restroom access based on gender identity will be quickly overridden by the new administration," he said. "Pray that the godless, progressive agenda will be thwarted and defeated."
And pray "that our land may once again be one nation under God," said Rev. Graham.
