Explaining how the police have succeeded in preventing riots or at least limiting the damage from riots caused by Black Lives Matter protests, Detroit Police Chief James Craig said, “We don’t retreat here in Detroit.”

“We’re just not going to do it,” Chief Craig said on FNC’s Tucker Carlson Tonight, July 28.  “You saw the images, Tucker, of streets where there was lawlessness, looting, burning, no sight of police officers. We weren’t giving up ground to the radicals.”

Since protests started following the death of George Floyd on May 25, authorities in Portland, Ore., alone, reported that protests and vandalization caused the destruction of property -- $23 million in damages and lost customers to downtown businesses.

Craig explained why Detroit’s experience has been different than so many other cities seeing large amounts of violence and destruction.

“Detroiters are fed up with these radical protests,” the chief said.  “I’m not talking about the peaceful protestors. I’m talking about the core group: These misguided radicals that have tried to incite violence in our city.”

“They said we’re not going to put up with it,” he continued. “And so we got a couple of things. We got a great police department, great leadership, but we have a community that stands with us and by us and said, enough is enough.”

Detroit, which in 2019 had the highest-reported violent crime rate in the United States, had numerous arrests following protests, which started on May 29. Nevertheless, Detroit has not had a single business looted or destroyed by protestors.
