Chasten Buttigieg, the same-sex husband of presidential candidate Pete Buttgieg, sent out a tweet on Sunday that promoted “arts education” and included a video clip of Chasten visiting with a group of elementary school students at the Orlando Repertory Theatre in Florida, where the students were rehearsing their production of “The Lion King.”

Chasten says to the students: “If you could please tell me your name and who you play in the show, too, that would be really fun.”

In the video that Chasten tweeted out, the first boy to respond says: “I’m Josh, I play the butt of the elephant.”

That drew laughter from the other students—and from Chasten.

Chasten then told the students why he will promote arts education if his same-sex husband is elected president.

“One of the only teachers I had that made me feel like it was okay to be myself and it was okay to be different was my theater teacher,” he said.

“She made sure all of her kids knew that they were loved and they belonged,” he said. “And that really helped me believe in myself. We’re stepping outside or our comfort zone, we’re learning something about ourselves that we hadn’t know before, and that’s why theater education matters.”

“That’ll be my platform and I’ll make sure that every day I’m doing what we can to make sure that kids have those experiences,” he said.

In the tweet he sent out with this video, Chasten Buttigieg said: “Growing up, theater helped me to find my voice. As an educator, I had the chance to help my students use the arts to find theirs. We need leaders who believe arts education is a necessity, not a luxury, so every young person can realize the best in themselves.”
