While the African-American community is monolithic in its attitudes, the Latino community is diverse, former vice president and presumptive Democrat 2020 presidential nominee Joe Biden said in video streamed on Thursday.
Biden made the claim while responding to a question on immigration during a Newsmaker Plenary of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) and National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ).
Biden said it’s a little-known fact that “Unlike the African-American community,” Latinos have “incredibly different attitudes about different things”:
Reporter: “Are you going to reengage with Cuba, though? I’m specifically wondering about the Florida communities that are incredibly interested in the Cuba issue and see status being given to Venezuelans while Cubans are being deported.”
Biden: “The answer is yes, I’m going to engage. Yes.
“And, by the way, what you all know but most people don’t know: unlike the African-American community, with notable exceptions, the Latino community is an incredibly diverse community - with incredibly different attitudes about different things.
“You go to Florida, you find a very different attitude about immigration, in certain places, than you do when you’re in Arizona.
“So, it’s a very different, a very diverse community.”
