Media Condemn Cruz for Not Wearing Mask – But, Give Schumer the ‘Okay’

When Republican Sen. Ted Cruz refused a reporter’s request he don a coronavirus mask at a press event this week, liberal media voiced outrage – but, when Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) asked reporters if he could give his press briefing without a mask, no reporter objected – and headlines were not made.

“Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) on Wednesday refused to wear a mask during a press conference on Capitol Hill after a reporter repeatedly asked him to put one on as a courtesy to others in the room,” The Hill reported on Thursday in a lead paragraph parroting its headline.

“When I'm talking on the TV camera, I'm not going to wear a mask," Cruz told the reporter. “All of us have been immunized,” Cruz added, pointing to the handful of colleges behind him.

“You’re welcome to step away, if you’d like.” Cruz said when the reporter persisted. “The whole point of the vaccine, CDC guidance is what we’re following.”

Cruz’s behavior prompted disapproving headlines and stories throughout the liberal media, ranging from CBS News to CNN.

But, on Thursday, Sen. Schumer didn’t just refuse to wear a mask, he joked about his refusal and actually mocked the ever-changing mask-mandate rules, playfully asking reporters if it was “okay” for him to speak to them without a mask:

“I’m allowed to still take off my mask. You haven’t changed that rule again, right? Okay,” Schumer said, removing his mask.

“Did you see the mask, everyone? I was in Ithaca on Monday. They gave it to me: ‘Ithaca Is Gorgeous,’” Schumer said, holding up the mask for the cameras – before putting it in his pocket and beginning his press conference.

No reporter spoke up and objected.

The Hill even posted video on Twitter of Schumer’s remarks showing him without a mask speaking to reporters. The Hill’s story on Schumer’s press event makes no mention of the senator taking off his mask to talk with reporters – and its stock UPI photo shows him holding up, but not wearing, a different mask than the one he removed at the press conference.
