In anticipation of the U.S. coronavirus death toll hitting 100,000, House Speaker Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) are asking President Donald Trump to order flags be lowered to half-staff “on that sad day of reckoning.”

In a letter to Trump published on Speaker Pelosi’s website, the two Democrat leaders say that lowering flags on the day the death count hits 100,000 would provide “a national expression of grief” over the lives lost.

Merriam-Webster.com defines a "day of reckoning" as "a time when the consequences of a course of mistakes or misdeeds are felt." Likewise, the Cambridge Dictionary website defines a "day of reckoning" as "a time when the effect of a past mistake is experienced or when a crime is punished."

As CNSNews.com has reported, "Schumer and Pelosi have been scathingly critical of President Trump's response to the pandemic":

"In April, Pelosi said Trump's response to COVID-19 has been “almost sinful.”  In late March, Pelosi told CNN's "State of the Union" that, "yes," she is she is blaming some COVID-19 deaths on President Trump."

In closing, Pelosi and Schumer call it a “matter of grave concern” and thank the president for his consideration.

The full text of the letter can be seen here and is provided below.

Dear Mr. President:

This weekend, we will observe Memorial Day an occasion of great importance as we honor the men and women who were willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for our country.  We will always carry their memory in our hearts.  We reserve Monday to give special remembrance to them.

As we pay our respects to them, sadly, our country mourns the deaths of nearly 100,000 Americans from COVID-19.  Our hearts are broken over this great loss and our prayers are with their families.

Respectful of them and the loss to our country, we are writing to request that you order flags to be flown at half staff on all public buildings in our country on the sad day of reckoning when we reach 100,000 deaths.  It would serve as a national expression of grief so needed by everyone in our country.

Thank you for your consideration of this matter of grave concern.

Sincerely,

NANCY PELOSI, Speaker of the House, U.S. House of Representatives

CHARLES E. SCHUMER, Democratic Leader, U.S. Senate
