The media have "problems with their intellect," according to Dr. Benjamin Carson, retired pediatric neurosurgeon. His remarks were made during Palm Beach GOP's Lincoln Day Dinner held last Friday.
"I get sick of the P.C. [politically correct] police," Dr. Carson said. "A couple of weeks ago I said that the people in Nazi Germany also did not believe in what Hitler was doing. But did they speak up? No, they kept their mouth shut. And you see what happened."
Dr. Carson continued: "Well the left wing said, 'Carson said that all progressives are Nazis and they're gonna change the country' and you know, this is why we need to have an educated populace, so that you can learn for yourself what's going on and not be spoon-fed by a bunch of people in the media who have problems with their intellect.'"
The media portrayal that Dr. Carson is objecting to came after his Jan. 31 remarks at a fundraiser for Oregon Republican Senate candidate Dr. Monica Wehby.
On Jan. 31, Carson said that the secular progressive movement aims to "fundamentally change who we are." The majority of Americans disagree with this agenda, he said, adding that they "are afraid to speak up. Because they will be targeted, they will be called names, they will be investigated by the IRS. All kinds of unimaginable things."
He went on to say that many people in Nazi Germany had been afraid to speak up, too:
"Think about Nazi Germany. Most of those people did not believe in what Hitler was doing. But did they speak up? Did they stand up for what they believe? They did not, and you saw what happened. And if you believe the same thing can't happen again. You're very wrong. But we're not going to let it happen."
Donald Trump, Allen West, and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) also attended Friday's dinner.
