( -- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad likened Israel to a “rotten tree” and said that the West, by supporting the “Zionist regime,” was “losing face for the sake of a bunch of criminals.”

In a speech Sunday in Karaj, in northwest Tehran, Ahmadinejad said, “You [the West] have made investments and are losing face for the sake of a bunch of criminals and are not aware that the Zionist regime is like a rotten tree that you have invested in, but you will lose face,” reported

“Do not assume that you can strengthen your foothold now that a number of rulers in our region have aligned themselves with you,” he said, “because they do not have any position among their people.”

Ahmadinejad also claimed that Israel may kill Palestinians but “the Zionist regime is a dead entity which cannot be brought back to life through such efforts.”

The Iranian president also dismissed the notion that the country was experiencing economic troubles because of sanctions against it, claiming that “there is no acute problem in the country” and that the “bases of the country’s economy are strong.”

Ahmadinejad blamed Western countries for supposedly plotting against Iran but said they were not succeeding, according to the Islamic Republic of Iran News Network, as translated by the BBC Monitoring Trans Caucuses Unit.

“They sat and plotted for several months, made coordination and conspiracies, schemed the way that from that side, the head of the Big Satan [President Barack Obama] could say that they imposed sanctions on Iran, and the others [inside the country] simultaneously carried out their schemes inside the country,” said Ahmadinejad. “They sought to be able to say that they [foreigners] succeeded, and at the same time sought at this side [inside the country] to oppose effective [economic] plans of the country.”

Last week at the White House, Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met and discussed the threat that Iran poses towards Israel. During their meeting, the president asserted that all options are “on the table” to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

“And as I emphasized, even as we will continue on the diplomatic front, we will continue to tighten pressure when it comes to sanctions -- I reserve all options, and my policy here is not going to be one of containment,” said Obama on Mar. 5. “My policy is prevention of Iran obtaining nuclear weapons. And as I indicated yesterday in my speech, when I say all options are at the table, I mean it.”
