( – Congressional Republicans’ “extreme” efforts to cut federal spending and reduce the deficit are “wide-ranging assaults” on women’s economic security, according to the National Women’s Law Center.

“We’ve seen wide-ranging assaults on women’s economic security advanced in the name of deficit reduction. Think of the [Paul] Ryan budget and the ‘Cut, Cap and Balance’ bill that passed the House on virtually party-line votes. The Senate blocked these extreme and sweeping proposals but public services have been cut across the country and women are bearing the brunt of these cuts through the loss of both important public services and jobs,” said Joan Entmacher, vice president for Family Economic Security at the National Women’s Law Center on a conference call Wednesday sponsored by the Feminist Majority.

“Since the recession officially ended over two years ago, women have actually lost over 300,000 jobs largely because of cuts in the public sector that have disproportionately cost women their jobs and under the Budget Control Act, funding for education, the Affordable Care Act, Violence Against Women programs, civil rights enforcement and other vital programs face cuts for years to come.”

The topic of the conference call was HERvotes, which is the group’s effort to mobilize female voters for the 2012 election aimed at protecting “Health and Economic Rights (HER).”

Entmacher also said, “But not every one is struggling and sacrificing. Not a penny of the tax breaks enjoyed by big oil, billionaire hedge fund managers or corporations that ship jobs and profits overseas has been touched. Warren Buffet has stepped up to the plate but so far he doesn’t have a lot of company.”
